“Will we inherit the sins of our fathers? Will our heritage determine our destiny? Will our environment limit our chances? Will today’s society give us a chance? Will his life be worth less than theirs? Will he be able to set himself free from the doomed destiny imposed upon him or should we pull the plug today? ”, THE KID. 

Through technics of his generation THE KID (1991), self-taught Dutch-Brazilian, questions social determinism, the thin frontier between innocence and corruption, the equality of chances, or the blurred sentiment of right and wrong in our modern societies. Each iconic work of THE KID exudes an uncanny sense of abandonment stained with inner violence, all the while confronting the audience with the realities of today’s injustice and the moral responsibility of our societies towards youth. 

As Oscar Wilde wrote in The Portrait Of Dorian Gray “behind every exquisite thing, there is something tragic”, this is what the works of THE KID have all in common behind their youth and beauty, like flowers are destined to fade, and his goal seems to be to immortalize his subjects in their defining moments, forever caught between innocence and corruption.

“Allons nous porter les péchés de nos pères ? Notre héritage va-t-il déterminer notre destinée ? Notre environnement va-t-il limiter nos chances ? Sa vie vaudra-t-elle moins que la leur ? Sera-t-il capable de se libérer du destin tragique qui lui est imposé ou devons nous le débrancher ?”, THE KID. 

Au moyen des techniques de sa génération THE KID (1991), autodidacte néerlandais-brésilien, interroge le déterminisme social, la frontière entre innocence et corruption, l’égalité des chances ou encore la confusion des repères entre bien et mal dans nos sociétés contemporaines. Chacune de ses œuvres dégage un sentiment troublant d’apparent abandon mêlé de violence rentrée, confrontant le public avec l’injustice contemporaine et la responsabilité morale de nos sociétés vis-à-vis de la jeunesse. 

Comme l’écrivait Oscar Wilde dans le Le Portrait de Dorian Gray “derrière chaque chose exquise, il y a quelque chose de tragique”, c’est ce que toutes les œuvres de THE KID ont en commun derrière l’apparente beauté et jeunesse, ainsi qu’une fleur est destinée à se faner, et il semble que son but soit d’immortaliser ses sujets au moment fatidique de leur existence, capturés pour toujours entre innocence et corruption.
